Introducing Alicia!

Introducing Alicia Hernández Pérez – new possible scholarship recipient of Friends of Pimpollo!

Alicia is an amazing 18 year old girl from Cerro de Aguila, a small Mixteco-speaking mountainous community three hours from Oaxaca City. She is living, working, and finishing high school in Oaxaca City and is the first of her siblings to attend high school. Her two older brothers, Fidel and German, were not able to attend high school and are now working in Northern Mexico in factories. There is a small elementary school in the community but the children must walk 40 minutes to a middle school in another town.

Alicia has worked very hard to finish high school and she is striving to reach her dream of becoming a nurse and returning to her village to help the community. She realizes that finishing her nursing degree will be difficult but she’s willing to continue working in Oaxaca and doing everything in her power to reach her dream. She is the role model for her two younger sisters, Abigail, 16, and Maria Citlalli, 6, and her village needs her help. She would take advantage of her ability to speak both Spanish and Mixteco to help the people in her community and surrounding villages.

Alicia has been looking for an opportunity to be supported by an organization such as Friends of Pimpollo to ease the path of graduating from nursing school and teaching the people of Cerro de Aguila about the benefits of preventative healthcare, such as the intake of folic acid to prevent spina bifida.

She is the hope for her family and they wish that Alicia can be supported to reach her dream, a wonderful dream that is worth supporting. There are many things that will also be achieved in this dream…it is a dream with many beneficiaries and it will also benefit those who support it. Go Alicia!
